BASEMENT APARTMENTS ARE THE FOCUS OF A SPECIAL COUNCIL MEETING TONIGHT
5/14/2018 2:40:43 PM

City councillors will be back in chambers tonight for a special General Committee Meeting.

There is only one item on the docket, and that is to discuss a plan to legalize all basement apartments across the city, without requiring any rezoning.

Under the current by-law, basement apartments are only allowed in the downtown, and a home owner anywhere else in the city would have to apply to have their property rezoned to create a legal basement dwelling.

The new rules would ensure that a parking space is made available for the tenant, and that the homeowner signs up for a registry so ensure that fire and building codes are met, and to see if there is a need for extended services, such as garbage pickup.

Tonight's meeting begins at 530pm.
