FAMILIES ENCOURAGED TO START HAVING CONVERSATIONS ABOUT DRUG USE
2/7/2018 6:30:44 AM

It's Drug Awareness Week and health care professionals and police officials are saying now is the time to open up the conversation between parents and kids about substance use and abuse.

Peterborough Police Inspector Larry Charmley says there were 170 drug overdoses last year resulting in 19 deaths, which is up from the year prior.

According to the Ontario Drug Use and Health Survey, in 2017 an estimated one in ten, or 97,100 youth (grades 7 to 12) reported using a prescription opioid pain reliever for recreational purposes in the previous 12 months, with more than half reporting they obtained them from a parent or sibling.
